On his seventh solo album, Andrew Collberg favors collage – piecing together demos recorded solo then reshaping them with longtime producer Mikkel Mohr. The result is a mixtape-style album moving from psychedelic pop and blown-out electronica to hushed instrumentals and lush ballads while still feeling cohesive from the lyrical thread that ties the album together. Written from a perspective of frustration, Hi Hopes pairs transparent lyrical observations with deceptively sunny arrangements contrasting the unhinged and absurd state of things. Full of Casio flavored synths, playfully trashy pop, lush pedal steel courtesy of Connor Gallaher, and even a reimagined Golden Boots cover. Born in Sweden, raised in Tucson, and now based in Cologne, Collberg has spent the last two decades touring and collaborating with different artists and creating his own solo music. Hi Hopes is his fourth release on Papercup Records — a record that’s messy, sincere, and full of hopeful ironic curveballs.
