Weirdly in Time is not just a musical journey but a collective creation, brought to life by the people closest to percussion maestro Ramesh Shotham. The creation process took a new direction as he recorded bits and pieces of the album with different family members and friends in Cologne and India. It began in the “Satori Sounds” studio with his son, Keshav Purushotham, and Keshav’s drummer colleague, Niklas Schneider. They started by layering percussion grooves, letting rhythms unfold organically. During his trip to India in 2024, he recorded his brother Naresh Purushotham playing veena and his niece Sahana Naresh on vocals in a Bangalore studio. Then, during Madras Special’s autumn tour, he invited his bandmates to join the process individually, allowing them to interact with the music intuitively and creatively. Violinist Zoltán Lantos, bassist Reza Askari, and guitarist Sebastian Müller each brought their unique voice to the project, recording their parts over several sessions—each contribution shaping and deepening the album’s character. His nephew, Kailash Srinivasan, lent his voice as a guest vocalist, adding another layer of depth. The visual identity of the album was shaped by the brilliant design work of Miriam Purushotham from realfakefaktory, capturing the essence of the music in stunning imagery. And at the album’s heart is his wife, Alexandra Putlitz, who has not only been part of the musical journey but has actively steered its course.
The beautiful album is a fresh vision of global jazz and a huge family affair. Grab your copy now!
